Three Places (I-80)
03:49
|
|||
Retracing black tar and white lines
To the scenes of ancient crimes
Worn mixtapes and old mistakes
Were they yours or were they mine
We didn’t know who we’d become
Couldn’t have known what was at stake
Dark glasses to shut out the western sun
And a pack of cigarettes for old time’s sake
But I quit them like I quit you
The longing lingers, making it hard to breathe
So I put this engine through its paces
Through towns we tore apart
Can’t shake myself awake from this stasis
You broke my heart in at least three places
Past deceptive lights of Lincoln
Interstate 80s desolate plains
Midwest wasteland of radio
I am singing your refrain
The transmission slips in Kearney
Still I’m transmitting my love
Limping towards Mt. Rushmore
And that Nebraska college town no one’s heard of
When the fog finally lifts, and my chest aches
Routes long abandoned, they are calling me
So I put this engine through its paces
Through towns we tore apart
Can’t shake myself awake from this stasis
You broke my heart in at least three places
And if you put your on mine
I would drive all night
Until we got this right
I’m only traveling through space
I’d need to travel through time
Through time
So I put this engine through its paces
Through towns we tore apart
Can’t shake myself awake from this stasis
And my gasoline-pumping heart
The rearview mirror holds old disgraces
My body shakes and my mind races
The only truth I’ll never face is
You broke my heart in at least three places
So I put this engine through its paces
Through towns we tore apart
Can’t shake myself awake from this stasis
You broke my heart in at least three places
You broke my heart
And I know broke yours too
You broke my heart
I’ll never forget you

19 hours is a while for the whole world to hold it’s breath
You rolled the dice a thousand times hadn’t stared down snake eyes yet
You could’ve been a castaway sleeping on a distant shore
Could’ve gone from safe and sound to a prisoner of war
Goodbye, Electra
A calculated risk, a monumental task
Failure was a question that no one thought to ask
Your talent for laughing off the impossible
Your ease for coming off as unstoppable
Could’ve been a castaway sleeping on a distant shore
Could’ve gone from safe and sound to a prisoner of war
Could have fell a thousand miles from blue above to blue below
The search party won’t stop until we know
Goodbye…
Burn the lights and break the clouds
Watch the skies, north to south
Send the signals burn the oil
Set down on the Howland soil
Could’ve been a castaway sleeping on a distant shore
Could’ve gone from safe and sound to a prisoner of war
Could have fell a thousand miles from blue above to blue below
The search party won’t stop until we know
You could’ve quit while you were ahead, beloved and slowly fading star
But if that was who you were you’d not have gone so far
Could have fell a thousand miles from blue above to blue below
The search party won’t stop until we know
Goodbye, Electra, goodbye
Burn the lights and break the clouds
Watch the skies, north to south
Burn the lights and break the clouds
Watch the skies

Concessions

That didn’t go like I expected
And nothing like we’d dreamed
It may feel bad to miss the mark
But good to have a team
Your trust has given me courage
And your hope has given me drive
If tomorrow brings us darkness
We’ve shown we can shine a light
So here’s to the losers
You can laugh, there’s plenty of us here tonight
Here’s to healing hearts and clever minds
Finding another way to fight
Now’s not the time to rest
But to plot our moving on
To stand and make it know that
We’re defeated but not gone
It would be so easy
To become the things we hate
Let our righteous fire
Consume us from within
Keep your eyes ahead
So here’s to the losers
You can laugh, there’s plenty of us here tonight
Here’s to healing hearts and clever minds
Finding another way to fight
Here’s to the fighters
Down but not quite out just yet
To keeping faith, refusing hate
And changing what you can’t accept

driving past the sign
i've just got to laugh
"population 50"
there couldn't be half
that many souls
who have a home within
these so called city limits
it doesn't take a minute
to drive from one side to the other
but you can't judge a place
by the ground that it covers
if the news is a battle
we are soliders far from the fight
at least we can look up and see stars at night
drifting past the place
i wrote songs with my band
i remember things i learned
i still don't understand
steetlights shining
off the gravel
of quiet streets where no car travels
empty buildings, the cemetary
forgotten founders and secrets buried
this town has lived longer than I ever will
with all of it's people come and gone
somehow no matter where I've been, what I've seen
I still miss the stars over Avalon
and it's quiet but for sounds
that we make ourselves, you see
it's not so bad as long as you
can stand your own company
for what we might lack
in artificial light
at least we can look up and see stars at night, see the stars at night
sometimes i still miss the stars

The sun rises in the east
I never thought I'd hear a prophecy in that
When I settled down, in this desert town
The future rang no doorbells
But to provide a frame of reference
Nobody here much looks me in the eye
It's like a pass backstage, this name badge
Just the junior lab assistant guy
Yet sometimes I feel like a ghost
In the shadow of a sleeping god
I feel a little sicker everyday
But I really need this job
Everyone here is so smart and so quiet
But I guess in science that's not so odd
Proper care and handling of this team
Might be a task to which I'm not equal
One of them just said he has become death
I wonder what he'll do for a sequel
To turn so many people to shadows
And dust clouds that flow like a flood
I guess when you wake a sleeping giant
It's no surprise that he looks for a club
I suspect that I aid and abet
The greatest crime in human history
I don't really wanna know, because tell me
Who doesn't love a good mystery?
Who doesn't love a good mystery?
And I wash my hands
As I piece things together
Can't even say how careful I need to be
And I wash my hands
You can't take a chance
When this world can be so, so dirtying
I feel a little sicker everyday
But I really need this job
Everyone here is so smart and so quiet
But I guess in scienece that's not so odd
Should I suspect I aid and abet
The biggest crime in human history
I don't really wanna know, because tell me
Who doesn't love a good mystery?
Who doesn't love a good mystery?
I can stand to leave a little mystery
I wash my hands, and wash my hands
I wash them while I look the other way

i couldn't be what you wanted
but what you want is always subject to such change
and i know that you're so tired
cos you've got a new apartment to decorate
you left the man to keep your pride,
synthetic plants and earth, but once you were outside
they all just melted in the sun.
they all just melted in the sun.
give me a sign when the heat is rising
and i will shelter you from ultraviolet rays
give me a moment to collect myself
we fall apart is so many pretty ways
so many pretty ways
I guess I can't judge by sight or taste
but smell and sound are saying you're real as anything
If we don't touch again I might explode
ever upward, defying gravity
i wrote you such pretty words
tried to make them real with a melody
but our love, it just melts in the sun
our love always melts in the sun
give me a sign when the heat is rising
and i will shelter you from ultraviolet rays
give me a moment to collect myself
we fall apart is so many pretty ways
so many pretty ways
and you're melting through my fingers again
i try to sculpt you back together
you'd think i should have learned my lesson back when
we couldn't stand up to extreme weather
dead of exposure, should have known better
give me a sign when the heat is rising
and i will shelter you from ultraviolet rays
give me a moment to collect myself
we fall apart is so many pretty ways
give me a sign, a shout or whisper
i can no longer see through haze
turns out i'm plastic too
yeah i'm just as fake as you

Forward
04:39
|
|||
Lean into the wind
Thought that the air
Would carry the wreckage
And cover the earth again
All our best intentions
Reduced to their dimmest
Their grey and least
No excuse for giving in
Stop stalling and straighten up
The future is not yet arranged
Maybe in a minute or two it won't
Feel so damn strange
This is not done
We are not lost
This story is not complete
Atfer all that we've won
And all that it cost
Now's not the time
To accept defeat
No surrender
No retreat
Just forward
Stop thinking your sliding down
The egde is further than you thought
If you only saw the distance down
You just might jump off
This is not done
We are not lost
This story is not complete
Atfer all that we've won
And all that it cost
Now's not the time
To accept defeat
No surrender
No retreat
No conditions, no concessions
No defeat, no direction
But forward
Forward, forward
Move forward, move forward
This is not done
We are not lost
This story is not complete
Atfer all that we've won
And all that it cost
Now's not the time
To accept defeat
The road is ahead
And the lights are all on
The fire grows high
And the doubt is all gone
There's nothing behind
That we want or we need
Deceptions and lies
We no longer believe
No surrender, no retreat
No conditions, no concessions
No defeat
Just forward

Lost downtown in the burning summer
Wasted so many things all that year
Oh oh
But I guess that you'd know
After all that we've been through
Do you still feel the need to drag me down with you?
Oh oh
Well I guess so
But I told you
(and I heard you)
This is the last time
This is the last time
That I call after midnight
Headlights on an empty street
Smile like you never knew me
Like you don't see right through this charade
I'm not gonna pull you out this time
I'm not gonna be around
To see your bleeding heart on parade
I guess I'll just go missing
I can see it all shattered
Stained glas, got dirty
And then got swept away
I'm not playing this game
I was getting along fine
I wish you'd just leave
When I know you won't stay
Remember we were afraid of nothing
If you'd like some aid in deconstructing
Well keep looking
Keep looking
And the sirens
And the stars we can never see
And the silence
That follows us down the busy street
There's no hiding
From the sliding back into day
What do you like so much
About the night anyway?
Sunrise on an empty street
Smile like you never knew me
Like you don't see right through this charade
I'm not gonna pull you out this time
I'm not gonna be around
To see your bleeding heart on parade
So tell me why the light takes you apart
The patterns I knew are only traces
For all the world, I swear I'd love to make a new start
Where I don't always find truth in dark places
And I heard you
This is the last time I call
Call after midnight

Broken Boy
02:42
|
|||
you take a look at him across the room
when just the right song is playing
turn and talk to your friends
just to make him wonder what you're saying
he could probably use a drink or two
but that's really not an absolute
the post modern man can destroy himself
with little more than time
add in a smile like you know a secret
to drive him out of his mind
add in desired time of give and take
some sincerity if you can't fake
these are just instructions
no need to worry anyone'll judge
twist in to a shape you like
depending on how much use you got from the original
you don't need to worry
he'll always thank you when you're done
he'll be shaking like a junkie
and saying you're the only one
Maybe it's something that must be done
But maybe you shouldn't so enjoy
you put this all together
you've got yourself a broken boy
you put this all together
you've got yourself a broken boy
you put this all together
you've got yourself a broken boy

I have had a long day
and I bet that you have too
That doesn't mean
They get our later hours
When status quo it grows
And we can't take
Being half dead and half awake
A sweet escape is in our power
And why should the morning sun
Mean the night is really through
When I most value time is when I
Waste it all with you
Though I tend to whisper
What I'm sure that I should scream
Tonight is for real life
And not for dreams
why stay uncomfortable when there's
Nothing much to prove
I always make you laugh
When I'm trying to make a move
Shadows on the wall
Twisting in the night
the steady rise and fall
I try to read it right
you can find me where
our joys and fears laid bare
lead each other through the dark
I was never all that clever
At asking for what I want
So I hope that this is better late
than never
If you'll meet me in the bedroom
I will be your broken boy
I like the way you put me back together

This is the room no longer closing in
This is the ceiling giving way to the sky
The flowers in bloom and then retreating again
Grasping for the feeling right before the feeling dies
The gears and the cogs. the plans we set in motion
Just follow the sinking sun into the ocean
You're so long away
(I can see you)
Don’t you think you’ve went far enough?
(But I can't reach you)
It's time to close your eyes,
(Won't you come and catch me?)
Just let go, and count down, and wake up
This is the road from your half-drawn maps
Our city dying growing smaller over you shoulder
The ciphers and codes keep the landscape from collapse
But if you're trying you can feel your bed growing colder
And the street lamps offer no answers
You're so long away
Haven't you went far enough?
It's time to close your eyes,
Just let go and count down, and wake up

From the time of our births
'Til we return to the earth
All that arrives will depart
'Til you defeat your innate
Will to destroy and not create
Passing shadows is all that we are
Rearranged grains of sand
And displaced air
The tide rolls in and
We're without a prayer
You won't find me and old man
Staring out to sea
Waiting for the sand in the glass
To run out
If you can ignore the siren's call
Long enough to put up four walls
And a roof that keeps the elements at bay
You might leave the world a bit
Better than it was when you found it
Before you slip back into the gray
When you put down your hammer
When your day is done
Someone was watching
They'll pick it back up
You won't find me an old man
Staring out sea
Waiting for the fires I brought to life
To be doused
If you wanna take a run at slipping one
Past mortality
Stop leaving footprints
And start building houses
It's not you against me
Not even us against them
We're on the same shore
When the tall waves crash in
We can build together
But won't stand apart for long
From the time of our births
Til heaven crashes to earth
All that arrives will depart
Indentations erased
By the water and wind
Time and time
And time again
You won't find me an old man
Staring out sea
Waiting for the fires I brought to life
To be doused
If you wanna take a run at slipping one
Past mortality
Stop leaving footprints
Start building houses
Start building houses
If you wanna take a run at slipping one
Past mortality
Stop leaving footprints
Start building houses

Sound on Sound
04:30
|

Golden hour on a rocky shore
Fleeting feeling there was something more
Than what I’d captured in the frame
Old mathematics, fortune plus blame
Satisfied, in that anxious way
Of a place you love but know you can’t stay
Feel it deep, the sun and the sea
But deeper still is your vacancy
Slow build piecing together the day
Peaks and crests arrest the mess of what I meant to say
Sound on sound
Regrets and fury unbound
My truth surrounds, hide in the air
If you don’t care, then they’ll never be found
In this sound on sound
Can’t relax in this dawning sun
This symphony doesn’t want to be done
This photograph, that dress you wore
Bleeding colors forming towering chords
The same old dance we’ve been sitting out for years
The song is rising, crying like a siren, but never in your ears
Sound on sound
Regrets and fury unbound
My truths surround, hide in the air
If you don’t care, then they’ll never be found
In this sound on..
The tension twists and shifts and grows
But you’ll never hear enough to know
In blinding light where I see the least
I spread my ash on Folly Beach
Sound on sound
Regrets and fury unbound
My truths surround, hide in the air
If you don’t care, then they’ll never be found
In this sound on sound
Sound on sound
Cacophony welling up from the ground
My straining voice, come push or shove
Can never quite be heard above
This sound on sound

Rise
04:18
|
|||
(Rise) 2x
We felt it taking shape
Hint of lightning in our bloodstreams
The truth is ringing like a mortar above your street
Fell to our knees
In the church we all saw in that same dream
Sang with the choir and our voices rang out so sweet
Home was a warzone in that story
But hey at least we know the territory
Trying to sift the virtue from the sin
We just can’t say when we’ll begin to
Rise
Up through the killing floor
Rise
Out of the blood and gore
I lit a candle and I held my ground
The change was rolling like a storm
And not a second too soon
A thousand cuts revealing faces
You wouldn’t believe were underneath
I offer thoughts and prayers, never treat the wound
And who among wouldn’t tire
Not knowing heroes from crucifiers
Could join the chorus of lamenters
But will we ever slip the center
And Rise
Out of the ruined and condemned
Rise
Not be so poisoned again
Rise (4x)
